Are your wormeries rodent proof?

The great thing about a tray system wormery is that a: It's off the floor so very unlikely to be attacked by rodents and B: Worms compost waste as you add it so they really help to neutralise the odours. We have had no problems with rodents with Urbalive or other tray system worm composters.

Does my food waste need to be broken up into small pieces before adding to the Subpod?

Accepted Answer

You don’t need to chop everything up small for the worms, but it does speed up the process so your food will break down even faster.

Composting will still take place in the warm, moist environment if you put in larger chunks. The worms will just wait until the microbes have softened up the more resistant pieces.

Remember to use the aerator when you add food so larger chunks are sent below the surface to break down, rather than drying out.

What do I do about Maggots in my wormery?

Maggots are the larvae of a number of species of flies, including the common housefly. The flies are attracted to food, in particular meat, and lay their eggs directly on the food waste. The maggots form pupae and hatch into flies. The whole of this life-cycle, on average, takes up to 10 days in warm weather and up to a month in cold weather. With regard to flies, you need to keep your food waste covered up. All flies lay their eggs on the surface of the food waste, but will not burrow. Make sure that you keep your moisture mat in place at all times (or you can use clean newspaper) to restrict access. In addition, you will need to keep any kitchen collecting bin (if you have one) covered, otherwise it is likely that you will transfer fly eggs into your wormery.

To break the cycle you can cover the top of the food waste in your wormery with a thin layer of garden soil or clean newspaper and refrain from adding waste for 2-3 weeks.

Flies prefer acidic conditions, so it is important to sprinkle a handful of the anti-acid lime mix over the surface of the food waste on a regular basis, for example, once a week. You are trying to achieve as neutral a pH level as possible so it is important to use equal quantities on a regular basis.

What to do if the worms try to escape from your worm composter!

There could be several reasons why your worms are trying to escape on the first night:

Stress: The worms may be stressed due to the change in environment, this could be the case if the worms were harvested from the wild or from a different composting setup. They may need some time to adjust to their new home.

Will i end up with too many worms in my worm composter?

The worms will breed to match your food supply. They regulate their numbers and size to match the conditions. As the adults eat the waste and move upwards the eggs hatch out so to make best use of your wormery you need to add waste really regularly.

Can birds on the nest eat mealworms?

As the adult birds feed their young they are looking for food rich in protein and liquids. Baby birds have no access to water and it’s needed to sustain life so this is provided by live food of one form or another.

We all know there has been a general decline in natural invertebrates so there are two key steps to take that will help. In the shorter and medium term supplement your birdfood with live worms (especially in the Spring) and for the medium to longer term plant native wildflowers, dig a wildlife pond and plant a native hedge to make a major difference for your birds and wildlife.

Which Worms Are Used For Composting?

Our composting worms are a mixture of species (mainly reds and dendras) selected for their composting ability. Available with or without bedding. These types of worms are productive at consuming organic leftovers. Common garden earthworms don't perform as well in the same conditions.

What pH level should my wormery be at?

Accepted Answer

A well maintained worm bin should have a pH measurement between 6.0 and 7.0, which is perfect for many types of composting worms. Most can handle pH conditions up to 8.0, but its always best to play it safe and try to maintain a pH in the 6.0-7.0 range. The easiest way to do this is to add a handful of lime mix into your kit every couple of weeks. Don't worry about over liming as your lime mix is a mix of calcified lime and fibre rather than conventional garden lime which is too strong.

Basically to ensure your kit isn't too acidic look out for the signs of acidity - these are flies being attracted to the kit, a putrid smell, a really wet kit, or sometimes even swollen bits all over your worms (which is protein poisoning). If you see or smell any of these issues just add a few more handfuls of lime mix - add crushed egg shells for a similar affect and all will be well.
